Observing various buildings such as buildings, houses, and other infrastructure, of course, Tom-Mates will think why these buildings can be so beautiful and sturdy? If you think about it superficially, it’s difficult to make buildings with various shapes but still sturdy. Of course, the building was built with a very mature calculation both interior and exterior by an architect. To know more about the work of an architect, it is a good idea to first understand what an architect is. Here’s the review :

ARCHITECTURE DEFINITION

According to the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI) architects are experts in designing and drawing buildings, bridges, and so on, usually as well as providing construction.

ARCHITECTURAL WORK DEFINITION

The work of architects is people who are experts and professionals in designing and drawing buildings that have artistic and aesthetic elements in them. Becoming an expert in architecture work is not easy, it takes a long journey and high flying hours.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF THE ARCHITECT

Based to the Indonesian Architects Association, there are 5 responsibilities of an Architect, namely:

1. Drafting the Design Concept

To create a design, the first thing an architect must do is create a concept first. In this section, an architect must collect the necessary data and information to facilitate the process of designing a building concept. After the data and information are processed, the architect can analyze the data that has been done. Design Concept which is the basis for thinking and considerations of all related fields (both structural, mechanical, electrical, and or other areas of expertise if needed) that underlies the realization of design ideas that accommodate all aspects, needs, objectives, costs, and constraints of the project. After getting approval from service users, this concept is the basis for the design of the next stage.

2. Making a Plan

At this stage, the architect makes a design based on the data that has been obtained and then submits the concept to the project owner. The objectives of this stage are:

  • Assist service users in obtaining a proper understanding of the program and design concepts that have been formulated by the architect.
  • Get the right design pattern and shape, the shortest construction time, and the most economical cost.
  • Obtain a more precise understanding of the suitability of the design concept and its impact on environmental feasibility.
  • Demonstrate the harmony and integration of the design concept with the provisions of the City Planning in the context of licensing.

3. Develop Design

At this stage, the architect will carry out a design based on the agreement of the owner to determine:

  • Construction systems and building structures, mechanical-electrical systems, and other related disciplines by considering their feasibility and feasibility, either separately or in an integrated manner.
  • Building materials will be explained in outline by considering the value of benefits, availability of materials, construction, and economic value.
  • Estimated construction costs will be prepared based on the building system, all of which are presented in the form of drawings, system diagrams, and written reports.

4. Make Working Drawings

In this stage, the architect will work on the final working drawings based on the things agreed upon during the design development. An architect must prepare implementation documents in the form of working drawings and writing specifications and technical requirements for construction that are clear, complete, and orderly, as well as a clear, precise, and detailed calculation of the quantity of work and cost estimates for the implementation of the construction.

5. Construction Implementation Procurement Process

In this stage there are 2 processes, namely:

a. Prepare the document for the implementation of the construction

Documents that need to be prepared are a description of the work plan and work implementation (RKS) and the budget plan (RAB) including the Volume List (Bill of Quantity/BQ). So it supports the process:

  • Selection of construction contractor
  • Construction executors
  • Supervision of construction implementation
  • Calculation of the size of the area and volume as well as the cost of implementing a clear development.

b. Auction

This stage aims to obtain a reasonable offer of construction costs and time and meet the technical requirements for the implementation of the work so that the construction can be accounted for and carried out properly and correctly.

6. Periodic Monitoring

At this stage, the architect must periodically control and supervise activities in the field so that the building is by the agreed design. To facilitate the control process, architects can use various applications such as Tomps which can monitor the process in real-time via mobile or web.

ARCHITECT’S WORK FUNCTION

Being an architect is not an easy job, here are the functions of an architect, namely:

  • Responding to the challenges of climate, society, culture, and technology.
  • Responding to the challenges of adapting humans to the world around them.
  • Fostering the environment as a whole because it is actively involved in the process of caring for the environment.
  • Become a cultural preservation activist where the architect’s work often intersects with local culture and automatically participates in preserving the surrounding culture which is rich in art and beauty

TYPES OF WORK OF ARCHITECTS

From Masterclass, there are several types of architect work, namely:

1. Design Architect

Responsible for compiling the overall design of the building project including analyzing the needs of the project owner, the location of the building, and the surrounding environment by considering the budget that has been set.

2. Technical Architect

Responsible for the planning of the building until the building can be used. Engineering architects are in line with design architects when working on small project scope.

3. Project Manager

Responsible for the whole project, developing work plans, and coordinating daily with the team so that the project runs smoothly.

4. Interior designer

In large projects, interior designers play an important role that is closely related to shaping the experience of building occupants while in the building. For example the placement of doors, windows, outlets, and other furniture.

5. Landscape Architect

Participate in outdoor design for example a place for rainwater management, plants, and a sustainable environment.

SKILLS REQUIRED FOR ARCHITECT WORK

Carrying out the work of an architect is to combine the functions of the right brain and left brain in a balanced way. Of course, this is not an easy thing, here are the skills needed in the work of an architect:

1. Math logic

To build a building requires mathematical calculations with the basic principles of geometry and algebra.

2. Creative

Not only a matter of numbers, but an architect must also have creative skills to encourage the creation of beautiful and innovative buildings.

3. Design skills

Not only does it make the design beautiful, but the architect’s work must also look good, practical, feasible, and to the needs and requests of the project owner. Here plays an important role to combine visual and functional.

4. Communication

In this case, an architect must be able to communicate with all stakeholders so that the project can run smoothly and each party knows the progress of the ongoing project.

5. Teamwork

The success of a project cannot be separated from the contribution of all parties, not individuals. Here, an architect is expected to be able to manage the performance of the team to efficiently and effectively carry out the projects that have been implemented.

6. Detail Oriented

The work of architects relies heavily on the ability to detail so that a beautiful building is maintained by its sturdy and safety factors. If you only focus on beautiful buildings without paying attention to being sturdy and safe in the long term, it will endanger the occupants later.

7. Understand building and construction

To make a building, the architect must understand the building and construction. As for only relying on the ability to draw, then it’s the same with a 3D expert

8. Problem-solving

In any project, only a few of the plans designed are free without any obstacles during the implementation process. This is where skills are needed in the work of architects to deal with various problems that may occur.

HOW TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL ARCHITECT

Becoming a professional architect certainly takes time and experience in working on various projects. There are things that Tommates need to do to become professional architects. Here’s the review:

1. Have an artistic soul and serve

An architect’s job is not to talk about ordinary art, but to create something while maintaining its artistic elements. Having an artistic spirit is not only innate but can be formed because of the environment and a high interest in learning the art itself. In addition, a building that has art must also pay attention to the function, security, and structure of the building to suit the needs and budget of the project owner.

2. Architectural engineering training and education

To become a qualified and superior architect, taking education is a must so that it is easier to understand all aspects of architecture.

3. Turn an idea into an architectural design

Being a professional in the work of an architect is to be able to visualize an idea in architectural design work.

4. Building relationships with the architectural community

In addition to the architect’s skills, Tom-Mates needs to build relationships with relevant communities such as the architectural community. This is so that more potential project owners will know about your existence and your works. In addition, to be able to support each other with other architectural professionals and compete healthily.

5. Architect Degree

In addition to the work, to increase the credibility of the architect’s work, the architect’s degree is very useful for consideration by prospective project owners. Usually, a professional architect degree is obtained from a program that has been accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). In addition, there are also special courses for architectural schools in which studies related to:

  • Architectural Design.
  • Environmental System.
  • Architectural History.
  • Building Science and Technology.
  • Calculus for Architecture.
  • Visualization.

With various reviews about the work of an architect, of course, Tom-Mates understands the details of an architect’s work. To carry out the work of an architect, of course, requires education, relevant work experience, and a recognized license which will be an added value for an architect. Becoming an architect is certainly full of twists and turns and struggles that are not for a while, along with strong provisions and fighting power, the projects you hold will be of higher quality. Good luck and don’t give up!
