Becoming a Project Manager for the First Time, Where Should I Start?

Many people feel scared and worried if they are chosen to be the manager of one of the projects. One of the reasons is that they feel confused about where to start and how to tackle the project?

Project Management or so-called managing projects is a job that is not easy. As a team strives to work more efficiently, this often means eliminating the role of the project manager himself.

To become a project manager, there are several things that must be prepared so that later the project goes well, including:

1. Get the Tools you Need

An important part of project management is the tools used. Calendars, task lists, project management software, and Microsoft Office products are the basics we need.

Also consider using an app for your phone or tablet if you plan to work on a project remotely. There are many options for apps that can be accessed online via smartphones and tablets, which can be synced across devices. This is not mandatory, but can be made an option.

2. Have a Special Schedule for Projects

As a project manager we must always be able to manage time and schedule well, we may also be asked to invite all other stakeholders, which could include high level management or executive leadership. Discuss this with superiors to ensure all necessary parties are involved.

Planning a meeting schedule must also be made. Discuss whether you plan to hold weekly, biweekly, or monthly meetings and if the teams involved can participate in the type of schedule we propose.

During the meeting, things like project objectives, deadlines, and other resources that may be needed should be discussed. It is also important to ensure that you have contact information for everyone involved.

3. Have a Neat and Organized Report Record

If you’re in a meeting, on the phone, or in person with a project team member, take notes. We sometimes feel like we will remember everything that was said and every detail, but it is very likely that something will be forgotten, or only partially remembered.

Taking proper notes and even sending meeting minutes to the team after the meeting will ensure that everyone is aware of what was discussed including relevant details, dates and updates.
